Built In-House (DIY)

A fully DIY build can save most of the cost, but if you are not a professional, it will take significant time and effort—and it is far from easy.

Act as Your Own GC

You become the general contractor, which requires solid construction experience. Communicating clearly with workers the build is often the most challenging part.

Hire a General Contractor

Hiring a general contractor with steel-building experience makes the process much easier.  A GC charges an additional 8-20% of the total project cost.

Option 1: DIY Steel Building

A fully DIY steel building project means you manage and assemble everything yourself. This approach can significantly reduce overall costs because you avoid labor and contractor fees. Prefabricated steel building kits make this possible by delivering pre-cut, pre-drilled components with installation drawings.

But it is necessary to evaluate whether one can really complete the independent construction rationally. Although we often say that prefabricated steel structures are as easy as LEGO, never underestimate the weight of steel pipes. Some structures require a crane to lift!

How much money can be saved if DIY is completely done by oneself?

Completely building it yourself will save you a lot of costs. Conservatively estimating, steel structure buildings can save at least $5-10 in costs per square meter.

Do You Have Enough Time to DIY Steel Building?

Based on Juhe Steel’s years of experience, no matter how large a steel building (even 20 * 40 inches) is, it requires a significant amount of time and cost. From land approval, land consolidation, to actual construction, it takes a considerable amount of time to proceed. If you DIY on your own, it may take longer. This may affect your life and work if sufficient time management is not done before starting work. This may disrupt your life schedule, please arrange your time properly!

The Benefits of Self Construction

Building a steel building on your own would be an extraordinary achievement. This will bring you a full sense of achievement and satisfaction, becoming a highlight of your life. When you introduce the steel structure building you built to your friends, everyone will express their approval to you!

Simple Process Introduction

  1. Obtain land approval
This is the most important step, in many countries and regions, obtaining land approval is a very difficult task. This will take a lot of time. Please do the land approval work before having a plan, as it will have a significant impact on the speed of your DIy steel building.
  2. Prepare the site
Clear the area, make the ground flat, and plan where rainwater will drain.

  3. Build the foundation
Mark the building corners, pour a concrete slab (or footings), and set the anchor bolts in the correct positions.

  4. Wait for curing
Let the concrete cure fully before you start assembling the steel frame (follow your local curing time).

  5. Unpack and organize the kit
Lay out all parts on the ground, match them with the drawings, and group bolts/plates/frames so you don’t mix anything up.

  6. Assemble the main frame
Stand up the columns, connect beams/rafters, and bolt everything together. Use temporary bracing so the frame stays straight.

  7. Add secondary framing
Install purlins and girts (the smaller members) to support the roof and wall panels.

  8. Install the roof panels first
Put the roof on early to keep the site dry. Add ridge cap, flashing, and sealing where needed.

  9. Install wall panels and trims
Fix wall sheets/panels, then install corner trims, base trims, and seal joints to prevent leaks.

  10. Install doors and windows
Fit the roll-up/sectional door, personnel door, and windows, then check smooth operation.

  11. Final check and clean up
Tighten bolts, confirm the building is square and plumb, touch up any scratches, and clean the site.

Tips: If you purchase relevant components from Juhe Steel, engineers and packaging will provide very detailed drawings, telling you every installation detail to help you quickly build.

What Mechanical Equipment is Needed When Building a DIY Steel Building?

If it’s a smaller DIY steel building, you may only need a tape measure, a level, basic wrenches, and an installation ladder. In many cases, a small tractor with lifting capability is also sufficient. However, for larger industrial buildings, it’s best to consult an engineer or a local contractor and ask them to provide a safe construction plan and solution.

Option 2: Act as Your Own GC

A shorter construction period can also save a lot of funds

If you are engaged in a related industry and have a considerable network in the construction industry. So this is a very suitable plan for you. You can quickly select experienced workers and start building the Steel Building quickly. A smaller building can be completed in 5-10 days under the operation of experienced workers. It can save nearly 15% of GC costs. This is very friendly for steel buildings with small budgets.

Common issues with this approach

If you don’t have connections in this area. It will be difficult to hire workers who are more responsible, and it is necessary to learn about them online or through local unions. These are quite tedious tasks, and if not handled properly, they can cause unnecessary losses.

Option 3: Hire a General Contractor

The Most Reassuring Steel Building Construction Plan

A strong general contractor is an excellent choice. Their experience saves you significant time and effort, acting as your single point of contact. They can even handle permitting and approvals, manage sequencing, interpret codes, and secure all required permits on your behalf.

Especially with a local contractor: they bring recognized qualifications, can anticipate regional risks and issues, and propose practical solutions. They also offer stronger after-sales support, responding quickly to resolve problems if anything arises.

Increased Project Cost

General contractors typically charge 8%–20% of the total project cost.

Key questions to consider:

  • Can you source, vet, and coordinate all required subcontractors yourself?

  • Do you have access to a reliable steel-building erection crew in your area?

  • Are you able to spot quality issues or missed tasks early—before they become costly rework?

  • Can you communicate clearly on-site (including technical terms and safety instructions)?

  • Do you understand local safety requirements (e.g., OSHA) and have time to stay compliant?

  • Are you experienced in negotiating labor rates, scopes, and change orders?

  • Can you build a realistic schedule and keep every trade on track?

A capable GC costs more, but they take on critical responsibilities—planning, coordination, compliance, and quality control—helping keep the project on budget and on schedule while adding practical ideas you may not have considered.
